To be born in American in 1958 to an intellectual family, solidly in the middle class, to be more or less well-educated, life is not very difficult. There are many jobs, many opportunities for success and a peaceful, relaxing life with a wife, 1.4 children, two cars, a dog, a swimming pool, etc. Everyone I knew had gone to the same schools had read the same books and seen the same movies; everyone thought more or less the same thoughts and basically agreed with everyone else. I wanted to find something more challenging. So I came to Russia where I knew no one and spoke not one word. That was an interesting challenge! In fact, I think that Russian ЖЖ is far closer to the model that we are looking for than ЖЖ in the U.S., which has been a bit overtaken by other services in recent years. There we want to clearly differentiate it from MySpace and Facebook; ЖЖ is about "community", "content" and "controversy". A good way to demonstrate this is that there is nothing to "google" in MySpace or Facebook because there is not much content there, whereas a very large percent of ЖЖ traffic comes from search engines. He said that there was no such thing as Fashion Photography outside four cities: Paris, Milan, London and New York. In other cities, people might think that they were doing Fashion Photography, but they were not, because it is simply impossible for innumerable reasons. If you are interested in the advertising business, you must leave Russia for a couple of years and work in either London or New York, and then come back to Russia and you will be king of the hill. This doesn't mean that you will necessarily then be doing good advertising work, though: I once asked the head of a Russian advertising agency why so much Russian advertising was not better and he answered that "It doesn't need to be." Do you believe it's possible to launch a successfull web project without financial investments (as it was with LJ or ICQ in earlier times). Yes. Not much. There are many examples even today. The best way to start your own company is to work at a regular job, earn some money and live in the real world while developing your project with your friends in the evenings and weekends. You generally shouldn't need to spend much, just rent some servers and work in your kitchen. Don't go looking for someone else's money. Just do it all yourself. If you have a good idea, the venture capitalists (otherwise known as the Vulture Capitalists) will start hovering over you and do everything they can to make money off of your ideas and hard work (that's their job description). Don't give in to the seduction of quick and easy money; if you do it means you don't believe in your project. Keep working hard and keep investing your own money and try never to give up control. Recently I was discussing a new project with him and told him it wouldn't interest him as it was a lot of money, very risky, not a very high return on investment, and probably irresponsible because it was such a fun and interesting project. I think that the mathematical average of all Russian mentality is probably not much different from the mathematical average of all 'Western' mentalities; however, there is much more variety in, a broader range of examples of, Russian mentality and so it is easier to point to one or two examples which are rather unusual. Afisha was/is not a copy of Time Out. Today you can buy Time Out in Moscow and you will see that there is an enormous difference in the two magazines. There was never a conflict between Afisha and Time Out, and I even invited Tony Elliott, the founder of Time Out, to be on the Advisory Board of Afisha Publishing House before he decided to license Time Out to a Russian publisher. Several years earlier, however, when we founded Vechernyaya Moskva, Tony consulted lawyers on this issue and he was advised that we were not violating any copyright or patent laws. But the rationale for our deal with Swedish project Avito is quite clearcut and simple. There are thousands of new selling and buying posts in LiveJournal everyday, both in trade-oriented communities and in individual blogs. So we wanted to offer LJ users a technological platform, facilitating this sort of activities. And we chose Avito as a technological partner, because they have a perfect, sophisticated and feature-rich platform, that prove its efficiency and overall success in the Swedish market. They even sold their Tradera solution to eBay. Speaking of Avito's small number of Russian users, we do not count on our partners to drive audience to the trading platform. Our partners provide technology, and LiveJournal brings users to the system. We do have some users, as you might know. |
